Mexico City time explained

Mexico scrapped daylight saving in October 2022, so Mexico City now keeps the same time all year. A narrow strip of towns along the United States border was exempted and still changes its clocks, to stay aligned with the American cities they trade with daily.

Mexico City does not observe daylight saving. Its offset from UTC is the same all year round, which makes scheduling with it noticeably simpler.

Reaching Mexico City

Mexico City shares most of its working day with the United States. Since Mexico stopped changing its clocks and the US did not, that overlap now shifts by an hour twice a year — which is exactly why the border municipalities were exempted.

How this page works

The time above is calculated on your own device from the IANA time zone database that ships with your browser, using the zone America/Mexico_City. Nothing is fetched from a server, and the offset shown is whatever is currently in force rather than a number typed into the page — so when a country changes its rules, this page changes with it.

The difference from your own clock is worked out the same way, comparing Mexico City's current offset against your device's. If your computer's clock is wrong, so is that comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Does Mexico still change its clocks?

Not in most of the country — daylight saving was abolished in 2022. Some municipalities on the US border are exempt and continue to change, so they stay in step with neighbouring American cities.

Is Mexico City the same as US Central Time?

For part of the year. Since Mexico stopped changing its clocks and the United States did not, the two drift an hour apart during the American daylight saving period.

Does Mexico City change its clocks?

No. Mexico City keeps one offset all year, so the difference to anywhere that does change its clocks will shift by an hour twice a year — from their end, not this one.
